How we count visits
We count which pages and ads are read so we can tell advertisers how their print ad did online. That's what keeps the magazine free. We count visits, not people.
What we count
- Which pages of an edition are opened, and roughly how long each stays on screen.
- Which ads are seen and tapped, and searches inside an edition.
- Whether you're on a phone, tablet or computer, your country, province and city, the kind of site that sent you here (a search engine, an email, social media), and the campaign name if the link you followed had one.
What we never collect
- No cookies for counting, and no ad trackers or third-party scripts.
- Your IP address isn't stored. We use it for a moment to work out your country, province and city, then discard it.
- Each visit gets a random number that disappears when you close the tab. It isn't linked to you or to your next visit.
- What you read isn't linked to you, unless you have an account and tick the box to link it. Then it's kept with your account until you untick the box or delete your account.
- To count unique visitors per day, we use a scrambled code that changes every day and is deleted after that night's count.
What advertisers see
Totals only: how many times an ad was seen or tapped, by country, province and device. Never a list of readers, and never anything about one person.
Switching it off
The switch above stops counting in this browser straight away. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as off without you doing anything.
More detail, including where the data is stored and who to contact, is in our privacy policy.
